While waiting to be picked up by our friends Nardo and Belen, our breakfast was accompanied by a troup of traditional Asturian dancers and musicians dressed in full regalia performing in the small plaza near our hostal. When they marched off, Nardo and Belen arrived. These are very old, very good friends from Galicia and we knew we would spend an awesome day with them. They wanted to take us to a small town they liked and have a weekend getaway of their own.
The festivities started with an unbelievable lunch in a traditional Asturian asador with sidras poured in the traditional manner from above the head into glasses held below the waist to aerate the cider, then swallowed in own gulp. We were seated in a giant empty cider barrel turned on its side for a meal of woodfire-grilled meats piled high on a platter of fried potatos: ox, steak, veal, pork ribs, lomo, murcilla, chorizo and probably more. This was the pinnacle of rustic meat eating. We followed lunch with glasses of hierbas outdoors under a tall horreo.
What an enjoyable afternoon and evening, it really seemed like a vacation. It was a great feeling to see familiar faces on a trip that we´re sharing mostly with strangers. We drove along the coast, stopping at a pretty harbour to take in the local charm. They had arranged rooms at a hotel, a HOTEL! What luxury. After such a huge lunch, we had a late dinner of salad, Cabrales cheese with fruit spread and pastel de cabracho, a fish pate.

Wow! That meal sitting in front of Nardo looks incredible! Did he share with you? :-)
After all that good eating, make sure you save room in your tummies upon return, for Kris' food at 750ml. It is GREAT!! (Fellow bloggers - try it out! It is on Mission St in Pasadena.)
Hi friends!!!!
Incredible updates... I'm loving the gorgeous pictures and especially love that I can imagine from experience some of what you are up to -and eating! Awesome you got to connect with Nardo & Belen. Please tell them helloI! Thinking of you always, especially as you get closer to the finale...
Much love,
Mai
Hello Kirsten, Carlos, and all of those out there reading their posts! I talked with them yesterday, and they are doing just great. Kirsten said: "Mom, this is just the coolest thing ever!"
They will not, however, have access to internet service again until they reach the final destination next Wednesday, July 23rd, so they asked me to update those of you still checking in on them.
Carlos especially is still taking copious notes each day, and many pictures (yes, mostly of FOOD!) and will post all of that when they get to Santiago De Compostela.
But in the meantime, they are loving the travels especially now that they are in Galicia, and heading away from the water to go inland. The paths are better marked, and the fact that those paths were probably made a thousand years ago by pilgrims before them has awed them. They lead over mountainous areas, through forests, and are well marked, even showing the kilometer markings (in tenths) to Santiago! They have 127 kilometers to go, I think she said. They have traveled over 400 kilometers so far.
There are several other pilgrims that they ran into so often that they have joined up, more or less, with some of them on the trail. Kirsten is sure they are making life-long friends.
Their feet are fine, spirits are great! Carlos has lost a lot of weight, Kirsten said - she guesses over 20 pounds. But of course, once he shaves his full beard it may be less. :-)
They did check in briefly on this site, without having time to post anything, and there was only one new note. They were kind of disappointed not to have more contact from us. SO - the mother in me is asking you all to give them lots to read when they do get to Santiago! They'll reciprocate with some incredible stories and pictures!

I'm so proud of you Kirsten and Carlos! Your stories are awe inspiring and, although I've been quiet cuz I'm a total blogtard, I've been checking your site every day at lunch in hopes of hearing more news and getting to read juicy stories of your meals...um...I mean travels. Can't wait to hear your voices when you return! Gros bisous, Mo
Howdy Pilgrims... (that was in my best John Wayne imitation - I sounded just like him, I swear...).
As we have been on a pilgrimage ourselves that included Southwest Airlines and all points of carriage, we haven't been keeping the best track of you, but from the glimpses you provided, you seem to be eating well and sharing your glorious selves with folks along the way. Just like you do at home!!!
Traveling has kept us from missing you toooo much, but not all the way. Miss you tons, can't wait to hear all about it and examine your newly recieved halos, or whatever the prize is for completeing your mission - WHAT?!? No prize, Kajsa says!?! Well, I hope that every long step was worth it! You two will have stories to share that will be passed down from generations in your family -- how cool are you!!!
Much love, Celia & Kajsa
CONGRATULATIONS!!
So glad you made it to Santiago de Compostela safely and in such great spirits! We are truly proud of you for your accomplishment! When you do have time to update the site, we'll all be eager to hear the additional stories, etc.
Don't party TOO hard!
We love you!

Hola Kirsten and Cabrero!
Looks like you're gonna make it--how fabulous. Your posts have been amazing. I love the picture of the banquet in the barrel.

Hey neighbors!
I just finished reading your blog. What amazing travels! We look forward to seeing more pictures and hearing the details about the rest of your adventures around a compound bonfire (and maybe a game of A2A?) I hope you have a safe, if slightly less eventful, trip as you make your way back home this week. Can't wait to see you both!

YAY!!
You both are on your flight from Madrid to Newark as I write this. We are eager to see you in person again and hear all about the great trip!
