Our route follows the coast from Bilbao in the Basque Country, through Cantabria, Asturias, and finally Galicia, veering inland at Ribadeo towards the cathedral city of Santiago de Compostela. This ancient path of pilgrimage follows the starry arm of the Milky Way which points to the "End of the World" at Finisterre, three days walk past Santiago, where the sun is extinguished each night by the dark waters of the sea. For more than 1200 years people of all ilk have made their way to the purported burial place of St. James the apostle, with the promise that upon completion all sins are forgiven. One estimate states that at its peak in the 12th to 15th centuries, about one-third of the total population of Europe made the pilgrimage to Santiago. However, the Romans, Visigoths and the Celts traveled these routes for many centuries before the Catholic masses, and it is believed that they too traveled to holy sites. We will be walking in the footsteps of millions who have come before us.

The blog looks great. Safe travels tomorrow!
You guys know how to plan in advance. If you stick to those dates, I'll be very impressed.
Good luck guys! I hope we will see you this summer. Be careful with your feet!
You will both be in our hearts and in our thoughts constantly. I'll try not to add to the weight on Kirsten's back as I mentally sit on her shoulder throughout the journey! Love, and more love, Mom
oooohhh macaya dice, "buen viaje, amigos!"
Hello!! I don't know if you will visit the blog during the travel, but I wish you have a very good experience. And I hope we'll see you in Vicedo this summer too.
Kisses
Good luck and happy feet! I'll be thinking of you two.
Love you guys
Glad you (apparently) made it to Madrid despite the flight hassles in Philly and then Newark. I can't believe you had to run to catch the last flight - or that you even made it!
Love to Gisela and Fernando and both of you.... Mom and Dad
Might as well commit some seriously delicious sins along the way since all will be forgiven at the end of your journey.
Enjoy every experience!
